About Gary Ainge

For the better part of my adult professional life, about 40 years, I defined myself as an architect. My architectural practice provided me with a sound, stable and rewarding platform for artistic expression in the built environment. As I transitioned my career from architect to artist. I desired to portray my own individual artistic interests in a more direct and personal way.

During this journey I have experienced similarities between the process of creating original oil paintings and the architectural design process. Many things will affect a project's outcome and as I strive to achieve a result that is beautiful and meaningful, I am challenged by many outside influences and as a result my design or composition adapts and changes. Whether architecture or painting, if I were to start that process again, I would not finish with the exact same results.

Most of my paintings are based upon recollections and reflections of places that I have experienced, while others are of places that I have only imagined. My art reflects my interests and life experiences and is, at its core, representational in expression. With each painting, I attempt to capture that fleeting feeling of the specific place; that split second in time when the light, the sounds and the air are like no other.
